i used to be laziest when it comes to exercise. This was inborn with me.And one of the reasons that i get fatty becoz i hardly had  any  good body movements or take them. Before i started taking phentermine, my doc asked me strictly(as he know me pretty well, family doctor dude).If you are going to take pill without exercise and diet , i wont allow you. First motivate yourself for exercise then talk to me.

My thought process started. I want to be fine, good looking and healthy and on other side excercise. It took me four days (they were less but thanks to my peehoos(my friends) who keep telling and yelling me to do something).

i started with walking and jogging. Kept this for 12 days.followed by riding a bike,Dancing to my  favorite CD, running and i bought a treadmill for myself. Now exercise has become integral part of my life.

Sometimes i want to give up initially but my family, friends and my doctor kept me motivated.

Well, i am done with my first month of Phentermine.I still remember my first day, i was scared having it.Even i was prescribed by my doctor. To loose 50 lbs is my target. iam quite fleshy actually and able to shed a good amount of flesh in the first month.Its not that quick process for me. It was slow with me with few irritations and sleeplessness in the begining but slowly that too vanished.

i chalked out a daily plan for myself.It was for a month.from meals to excercise to phentermine, i laid the plan for myself and motivated myself to follow it strictly. i lost 15 lbs in a month. And thats not a bad deal!!!

It is hard to pass up the appeal of losing weight quickly. This is with me also. There is always a temptation with fat guys (one me) to loose weight fast. And this is often irresistible.
Well if we listen to what is said clinically “one can lose weight without being hungry or working out for hours at the gym!” But are they a safe and effective option for weight loss?
There are two basic types of weight loss drugs
1. Prescription drugs: The one which have been around for years and are medically factual.

2. Non-prescription drugs: Not advisable

There are basically three choices, Xenical (orlistat), Meridia (sibutramine), and phentermine.

What struck gold with me is phentermine. It is generic and the least expensive of the medications. It  has been on the market the longest. Once a part of the famed fen-phen combination weight loss drug, Phentermine works to decrease appetite.. It is the most widely used weight loss drug.

I title this blog post that because even on the journey to balance, occasionally a topic comes to my attention again and again that I feel I just have to speak to. Disclaimer: obviously, not all health care providers treat their patients with disrespect or disregard. There are many caring practitioners who do take a more compassionate and holistic approach to health care.

Having said that, I am wondering… why much of the health care community approaches “health” from such a degrading, dissecting, and disrespectful place? Especially when it comes to something Drs. believe that individuals are “choosing” to do to themselves.

Examples? *Being a smoker. *Being a drinker. *Being a (illicit or prescription) drug abuser. *Being obese.

Now, in all of those listed “self-inflicted” health conditions–except one–there have been developed pharmacological interventions to aid the person in overcoming those health threatening challenges. (I’ll give just one example for these below. I am sure there are more.)

• Abusing nicotine? Here is the patch.
• Abusing alcohol? Here is antabuse.
• Abusing drugs (illicit or prescription)? Here is buprenorphine (for opioid abuse)

So, what about a (good quality and Dr. endorsed) pharmacological intervention to help those who are overweight (or abuse food) in order to help them ease their cravings along their journey to empower them to take control over their addiction? Well, there have been various pills through the decades offered to help control appetite. In the mid-1990s, doctors prescribed the popular appetite suppressant “phen-fen” (combination of phentermine and fenfluramine). However, fenfluramine and Redux were withdrawn from the market in 1997 because they caused damage to heart valves. Phentermine is still available by prescription. But Drs. seem very reticent to prescribe phentermine (and of course, insurance won’t cover it even if a Dr. would prescribe it) or any other pharmacological intervention that may be available to help obese patients lose weight. (Oh yes, there is “Alli” which takes the approach of having individuals poop out the fat).

So, what is the (seemingly) knee-jerk prescription of doctors to their obese patients in order to help them overcome being overweight (and possible addiction to food)? Life-threatening surgery. Sure… it may have worked for Star Jones and Al Roker… for now.

However, I have seen so many individuals that I personally know of who did not achieve lasting benefits from these surgical interventions for obesity. Furthermore, in some cases people I know of have subsequently and prematurely died as a result of those surgical interventions for obesity.

These interventions for overweight (or obese) individuals seem so extreme when compared to interventions offered for other dependence/abuse/over-use issues. By way of comparison do we quadrant off 75% of a smokers lungs so that they won’t be able to take in as much smoke? No.

I know I am not a Dr. and much of this may seem like oversimplification, but like I said–it is my unbalanced rant on my journey to balance! I know this is not the end of my thoughts on this topic. However, it is the beginning of a busy day, so for now I will bookmark this and come back to it.

There are many drugs in the market for weight loss. Patients from all walks of life come to clinics in search of  medication which is going to make them thinner without any effort. No exercise, no dieting. It seems like the perfect and obvious choice. But is it? What about the side effects of these medications? Would it do more harm than good?

For the answer, we may have to go a little bit into the history of weight loss medications. In the 90’s, a popular medication for weight loss was commonly prescribed. It was called “phen-fen” and composed of phentermine and fenfluramine. However, this drug was later recalled due to the side effects of the medication. It damaged the heart valves. Apparently, the component which was the problem in the combination was fenfluramine. Phentermine on its own did not appear to have the same effect.

Currently, the more well-known weight loss medications available in the market are Reductil/Meridia(Sibutramine) and Xenical. Reductil/Meridia is an appetite suppressant and Xenical/Alli inhibits the breakdown and absorption of fat. These medications are approved for use in conjunction with lifestyle modification. Weight loss is typically seen after a few months of taking the medication. After this, weight loss tends to plateau off .

Another weight loss medication in the market is Duromine. With Duromine, weight loss is seen much faster, typically in a few weeks. However, side effects are unpleasant. Most people taking Duromine experience excessive thirst, insomnia, mood swings, lethargy and palpitations. It can be a little frightening when experiencing these effects. Some people are unable to tolerate Duromine due to the side effects.

The concept of taking pills for weight loss may be very tempting indeed. After all, popping a pill is infinitely easier than driving to the gym, looking for a parking space and then sweating it out on the treadmill or weights machine for an hour before dragging yourself home. However lets stop to consider the side effects of these medications.

Reductil/Meridia – the most common side effects are dry mouth, anorexia, insomnia, constipation and headache. However there is a long list of potential side effects including heart problems, seizures and high blood pressure. Xenical/Orlistat/Alli – As Xenical blocks fat absorption, the fat consumed is eliminated as waste products. This produces oily stool, abdominal bloating, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal cramps and even leakage of oily stool.  These symptoms are reduced with low-fat diets. Other side effects include reported cases of kidney and liver damage. Uncontrolled high blood pressure was also noted.

The message in this article is that all medications have side effects. Although reported cases of side effects may be few, but we still have to weigh the risks of taking a certain medication against the benefits we are going to receive. For example, a person who is not able to lower persistent high blood pressure via lifestyle measures would benefit from taking drugs. In this case, the benefits of taking a blood pressure lowering drug outweighs the risks.

We must remember that any medication we take can potentially cause serious side effects. Is this risk really worth it for losing weight when lifestyle changes can provide the same effect? My answer is that if the person is able to exercise and keep to a good diet, that is the road to take. It is safe and has many other good benefits beyond weight loss.  Medications should be reserved for people who are obese and have some contraindication to exercise, eg arthritis of the joints. Even then, only short courses of these medications should be taken because people who are obese also tend to have other issues such as high blood pressure and heart disease which again compound the side effects of the medication.

In last three post of mine we have become quite familier with phentermine. But i left one aspect, what is the mechanism that it follows to help to reduce weight.Generally speaking , the mechanism is same as that of any surpressent.
